The author tried to draw our situation with that of other great empire like the Roman, the British, and the Dutch.
A cool thing I learned on page 8 - the original Ford Model-T was built to run on corn ethanol, and the first Diesel engine was designed to run on vegetable oil. Can 19th century technology solve our 21st century problem?
